Tools for Building Van's RV-14A Aircraft

Having correct tools are essential for the success of every project. But for the airplane construction it is crucial. It is one of the key factors of the success of the project. Tools you require to build your aircraft usually go beyond of your everyday household tool box, but it is essential to take the time and get all required and even recommended tools.

When I first started with this project I researched the tools required for RV-14A construction. Number of aircraft tool resellers have a packaged tool box for this aircraft and runs about $2,000 (the most comprehensive package). I had many friends, who didn’t know much about aircraft construction, telling me this is a rip-off, most of the tools are overpriced and that I would not need them. I was inclined to believe them as my first reaction was exactly the same. Why would I spend around $2,000 on tools and that’s not even the complete list? I bet I would get these tools individually much cheaper. But one thing that forced me to get the tool kit is the unknown. As I mentioned above, the tool list goes well beyond your household tools and when I looked at the list I realized that most of the tool names I haven’t even heard off. I mean what is a fluting pliers, or back rivet set, or bucking bar, or 100-degree countersink (the common countersink is 40-degree), or even a 3x vs 2x rivet gun. In any case, I decided to order the tool kit instead of chasing each individual tool separately, which at the end, given my time, shipping costs and running around would probably end up costing same if not more.

I have to tell you, I am glad I did. Not only it saved me lots of time and money, but I used almost every single tool they had included in the kit. It was nice to have the right tool on hand when the job called for it. And the price? Well, aircraft tools and parts in general are a little more expensive compare to regular hardware store tools but compared to individual tool prices these were very comparable.

So, if anyone hesitates to get the tool kit or not, I would highly recommend it.

In addition to the tool kit, Van’s Aircraft also has recommendations of other tools. Some of these tools are recommended but I almost want to say required. Good air compressor, band saw, grinder and other tools mentioned in Section 3 of instructions manual of Empennage kit are essential if you want to have a successful project.

My recommendation, if you set to build an aircraft, don’t skimp out on the tools that will make your project a success.
